Launching incendiary devices into the sky with no thought as to where they might come down is not a good thing to do. Here's a message from the NFU:

Help create a safer countryside for us all to enjoy. Please add your name to our petition to get sky lanterns banned.
These floating flames can cause wildfires, harm both farm and wild animals, destroy food crops and litter our countryside. They are particularly dangerous at times of warm weather and extreme heat.
It is time for a total ban throughout England and Wales to remove this menace.
