Petition against environmental degradation at Chippenham

July 17, 2020 2:38 PM

A message from A350 Corridor Alliance:

Wiltshire Council remains set on its perverse course of greenfield development and undesirable road building. This is a council that has never indulged in rational planning, where housing needs are considered together with the social and transport problems of neglected town centres. It has consistently pursued its bizarre road ambitions through whatever means irresponsible central government provides - Local Enterprise Partnerships, Housing Infrastructure Fund etc. The processes are entirely unaccountable (central government now takes no interest in how public money is spent or whether there is any value for money) and devoid of any process of public consultation.

On top of this Wiltshire Council (WC) now considers itself competent to gamble with public money as a developer in its own right. This is a council that has recently asked central government for a bail-out to put its books in order.

The East of Chippenham proposal is typical of the cavalier attitude of WC to all planning matters. Housing is necessary (especially social housing), but it has to be created around principles of sustainable transport, environmental stability and the future health and wellbeing of the population. Wiltshire's only way of thinking is to encourage endless sprawl and ever more car-dependence just at a time when action to tackle the climate change and biodiversity crises is imperative.

This is not the Build Back Better we were hoping for as some kind of compensation for the tribulations and sacrifices of the pandemic crisis, but rather the unfocused inanity of Johnson's Build Build Build.

Please help to stop at least one of these lunacies by signing this petition.
