Southern Area Planning considers Mere footpath battle

September 19, 2019 8:17 AM

Should people in Mere be allowed to take a safe and convenient short cut from The Square across a private car park to North Street? The route avoids Manor Road, where danger from motorists is a concern for residents. The owners of the properties say it shouldn't become an official footpath, whereas the town council and many people who've used the route over the years say it should.

The committee meeting on September 19th heard from many residents who'd used the path until it was blocked in 2017. However because there were also objections - though none of the objectors bothered to go to the meeting - the matter has to be referred to the government. A planning inspector will make a decision after considering the matter, probably at a public enquiry.
