Trowbridge Council asks for cycle links in new development
The Ashton Park development is a huge new estate on the West Ashton road. In responding to the plans the Town Council has suggested improving the facilities for cyclists and helping residents by keeping lorry traffic off of residential roads.
Here's their response:
That Trowbridge Town Council welcomes the progress being made on the plans for the development at 'Ashton Park' to meet the needs of the growing sustainable community of Trowbridge. The Town Council welcomes the proposals for the West Ashton and Yarnbrook Relief Road, providing additional capacity on the A350 and approaches to Trowbridge, improving traffic flows, accessibility and contributing to the economy of the town and area. Trowbridge Town Council has a number of concerns which we would ask are addressed in changes to the proposal at this stage, amendments to the proposal as the design progresses to implementation or additions which will improve safety, sustainability and accessibility:
i) Provision of a cycleway/footway the full length of West Ashton Road through the development and, south to and across the new Relief Road to provide safe and sustainable access between West Ashton village and Trowbridge.
ii) Realignment of the cycle/footway links through the development to the East of the railway line to persuade cyclists and pedestrians to use the existing bridges under the railway line and dissuade them from using the at-grade footpath crossings of the railway line in this area. (This can be achieved by careful alignment of shared use foot/cycle routes, such as the one indicated running West from the LLAP through residential and employment zones should be realigned to run northwest towards the bridge, to the north of the employment zone.)
iii) Full cycle route provision along the existing right of way which runs from the Drynham Lane Bridge in a north easterly direction towards the River Biss, Barley Rise and West Ashton Road.
iv) Full cycle route provision from Leap Gate adjacent to Pond A1 in an east south easterly direction towards Biss Woods, to facilitate a through route to the A350 and then onwards to Steeple Ashton to provide safe and sustainable access between Steeple Ashton village and Trowbridge.
v) Full cycle route provision from Green Lane to the north of Green Lane Wood alongside Green Lane and Biss Woods to West Ashton Road, to provide safe and sustainable access between Paxcroft Mead and Hilperton to White Horse Business Park.
vi) Weight restrictions should be imposed on through residential routes particularly the western half of the development.
