Small Businesses - Council must do better

WC Leader Jane Scott signed the Federation of Small Businesses Engagement Accord on Thursday January 28. The agreement has been developed to encourage local authorities to build constructive relationships with local businesses.

The council has signed up to 14 commitments, which include consulting with businesses on the budget, giving adequate notice of meetings and making consultation documents understandable.

The number of small businesses in Wiltshire is higher than both regional and national averages and the Wiltshire branch of the federation is thriving with 3,500 members. Supporting and working with small businesses is critical to the economic and social development of the county. As well as bringing money and jobs into Wiltshire, small businesses offer customers choice and diversity.

Councillor Scott said:

"Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Wiltshire economy. Signing the accord formalises our commitment to work more closely with small businesses. Improved consultation and communication will ensure that this important sector is supported through financially challenging times and can continue to develop and grow"
